HIGH STANDARDS AND ACADEMIC RIGOR RESOLUTION

OPPOSE LEGISLATIVE EFFORTS TO DIMINISH GRADUATION STANDARDS AND ACADEMIC RIGOR

STATE OF TEXAS                  )
                                                )
COUNTY OF DALLAS           )

WHEREAS, the Dallas Independent School District has set goals to improve graduation standards and academic rigor;

WHEREAS, the Texas Legislature is considering House Bill 5, Senate Bill 3, and Senate Bill 1724, that will diminish graduation standards and academic rigor by reducing graduation requirements and substantially reducing performance accountability;

WHEREAS, students’ post high school success is increasingly tied to the 21st century innovation and investment economy, which increasingly relies on new skills and college completion;

WHEREAS, the number of Texas jobs requiring post high school education will grow 20% by 2018 and jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will grow 22% faster than most other states during the same time period;

 WHEREAS, removal of college readiness standards currently under legislative consideration will adversely impact the college access and completion and drive up the cost of remediation in post-secondary education;

WHEREAS, students taking higher level mathematic classes in high school complete college and earn degrees at vastly higher rates than those students taking a less rigorous course of study;

WHEREAS, diminishing graduation standards will not meet the demands of employers in North Texas for an educated work force.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees calls on the Texas Legislature to reject all attempts to diminish graduation standards and academic rigor in the state.
