For the fourth straight year, I was pleased to be able to see the Justin F. Kimball Knights play in a state basketball championship game. 

Since this is my last year as District 6 Trustee, the 2014 state finals will be a special memory of the outstanding young men of Kimball High School accomplishing their dream of winning another state basketball championship.

Kimball Knights basketball team defeats Beaumont Central - face Amarillo in fourth straight state championship game

The Justin F. Kimball Knights defeated Beaumont Central on Thursday, March 6, at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX. 

Kimball's team won the game over Beaumont Central - 60-56. 

The Kimball Knights advance to the state championship game on Saturday in Austin against Amarillo.

Justin F. Kimball Knights end successful season in loss to B. F. Terry Rangers in state championship game

 Congratulations to the Justin F. Kimball Knights boys basketball team on ending another successful year. The Knights received the silver medal for placing second at the 4A state championship finals.  The final score was 55-47 but the game was very close at the end.

The Kimball Knights held a lead at halftime but the Terry Rangers (Rosenberg) found a way to win in the final minutes of the second half. The first half was won by the Kimball Knights. The second half was won by the B. F. Terry Rangers.

McDonald's All American senior guard Keith Frazier finished the game with 24 points.

The Kimball Knights boys basketball team returned to the 4A final state championship game for the third straight year - a very difficult thing to do.

Our thanks to Coach Royce "Snoop" Johnson and his staff, Principal Earl Jones and all of the student athletes for another successful season.

Tonight the defending boys state champion Justin F. Kimball Knights defeated San Antonio Northside Brennan 64-52 and will return to the State championship game on Saturday for the third straight year.

McDonald's All-American senior guard Keith Frazier scored 18 points.

The Kimball Knights (23-9) will face Rosenburg Terry (29-9) in the state championship game on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. - Frank Erwin Center - University of Texas at Austin .

The Kimball Knights - if successful - would become the first team to win three consecutive official 4A state championships since Houston Wheatley in 1968-1970.

The back to back - 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 - defending 4A state boys basketball champion Justin F. Kimball Knights have advanced to the state semifinal game for the third straight year. The Kimball Knights (22-9) will be playing Northside Brennan (39-2) at 8:30 P.M. Thursday evening.

Keith Frazier, a 6-5, 185-lb. senior guard, was named a McDonalds All-American player in February, 2013. This week Keith Frazier was named boys basketball player of the week as he led the Kimball Knights into the state tournament semifinals.

Congratulations to Coach Snoop Johnson and the Kimball Knights for advancing to the state semifinal basketball game in Austin for three consecutive years.

Students and community celebrate 5th Annual Cinco de Mayo Food Festival at Justin F. Kimball High School

5th Annual Cinco de Mayo Food Festival

Team spirit at Justin F. Kimball High School was tops again as English Language Learners from several Spanish speaking countries hosted today's grand Cinco De Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May")  celebration.   Working with them, native English speaking students from diverse backgrounds collaborated to help implement and host a cultural day of learning.

Cinco de Mayo is observed in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in Puebla  to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride.  The day also commemorates the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.

An annual event for Kimball Knights, this 2012 Cinco De Mayo celebration began with a pre-dawn live broadcast from the school.  By Noon, several news stations and reporters were there to capture the activities, bursting with colorful decorations and a festival of food dishes homemade by student families.

Media Center Director Teresa Anderson had positioned  books and tables to help students transform the library into a mini-center of Mexican culture.  Adding to the atmosphere, several teachers and staff  together with  student hosts wore authentic Mexican garments, jewelry and hair pieces.  In addition to students' exposure to history, art and customs, Mexican music and dance enriched the experience with ballet folklorico and mariachi demonstrations.

There will be no standardized tests on today's lessons on teamwork, respect, communication, creativity, self-discipline, personal development, ...among others.  Nor will these lessons be a factor in school ratings for Kimball.  However, I am certain that this day of teaching and learning will go farther than high-stakes standardized tests do in helping the students to become responsible, successful citizens.

The Kimball Knights basketball players never gave up.

On an afternoon when they could have given up, the determined Justin F. Kimball Knights basketball team came back time and time again against an outstanding Houston Jack Yates team - the back-to-back 2009 and 2010 state 4A champions. 

With the victory, the Kimball Knights are now back-to-back 2011 and 2012 state 4A basketball champions.  

Kimball senior Shannon Lilly Jr. - "Mr. Big Shot" - repeated  from last year as the 4A championship game MVP and scored 27 points. 

Congratulations to all the dedicated players on the Kimball Knights basketball team who would not quit, Coach Royce Johnson and staff, and Principal Earl Jones for an outstanding, history-making season. 

The final score was 78-75. 

Interim Superintendent Alan King and many Kimball Knights supporters were also present among thousands in attendance. 

Coach Royce "Snoop" Johnson described the game: "They found a way to win and were not afraid to lose.”

Tonight the defending state champion Justin F. Kimball Knights (33-5) boys basketball team won a hard fought state semifinal victory over San Antonio Alamo Heights (34-3)  The final score was 47-43. 

Congratulations to Coach Royce Johnson and the dedicated young men for a well-deserved victory. 

The state 4A final game will be played against Houston Jack Yates (33-5) at at the Frank Erwin Center (University of Texas) at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday afternoon in Austin, Texas.

“I love a parade," was the look on everyone’s face this morning as children of all ages -- from those in strollers to those on canes -- lined up along West Ledbetter Drive in Oak Cliff.   Citizens came out to greet the parade of the Justin F. Kimball (Knights) basketball team.  It was the first opportunity, since their dreams-come-true victory in Austin two weeks ago, for the Knights to present to the community their winning trophy for being Class 4A State Basketball Champions.

In addition to Kimball cheerleaders, majorettes and organizations, student groups from surrounding feeder schools also marched  in the parade.  They all, elementary - 12, entertained the crowd with performances and enthusiasm.

This was the Knights' second public celebration this week.  On Thursday at Dallas ISD Board meeting, Supt. Michael Hinojosa and I gave resolutions of recognition for the sixteen team members as they stood handsomely dressed in school colors navy and crimson.

Appreciating the number of other basketball teams the Kimball Knights had to defeat and games they won to get to the state championship, a packed board room of students, parents, staff and teachers gave the Knights a standing ovation and several rounds of applause.  We recognized that for many months, these humble  young men had to commit to performing athletically and academically in order to have a chance at winning the title, ...and they did.  With effective coaching and teaching, with steadfast determination and dreams, ...that’s just what they did.  They took the challenge.  They got the chance.  Now, they are 2011 state champions.

Congratulations and much appreciation for service, love of the game and deep love for students to: head coach Royce Johnson, assistant coaches Ryan Foppe, Robert Jacobs, Bo Johnson and Toby Daniels; and athletic coordinator Carlton Nelson.

Thanks to Ms. White and Ms. Stevenson for coordinating the parade and festivities.
