Study finds paying teachers for performance doesn't raise test scores

"NASHVILLE – Offering middle-school math teachers bonuses up to $15,000 did not produce gains in student test scores, Vanderbilt University
researchers reported Tuesday in what they said was the first
scientifically rigorous test of merit pay."
The results could amount to a cautionary flag about
paying teachers for the performance of their students ..."
"I’m a 4th grade teacher in Hillsborough County FL. Our district was one
of the recipients of a Bill Gates Foundation grant. (100 million of
the 260 million) We are implementing an entirely new evaluation and
effectiveness system in our district that will link scores to pay. Our
teachers are stressed to the hilt over all the changes. We just want to
be able to teach. We are jumping through hoop after hoop at the
expense of the children in the classroom."
