Thank you Dallas for making the 2009 Dallas African American Read-In a success on Saturday, January 31 at the Majestic Theater.
It was the 10th year of an over-capacity crowd at the Majestic, with many turned away. When we started a decade ago, it was not imagined this event would be the great success it has been from the first year. It was thought "Who will come out in Dallas, Texas on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon in February to hear reading and literary entertainment?" For ten years, the answer has been an audience of over 2,000 at the Majestic Theater.
Much appreciation to Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) and Chancellor Wright Lassiter Jr., our African American Read-In sponsors, steering committee, many volunteers and supporters.

THE MORNING BEFOREby Karl
Early morning
The day before
The Read-In began
Seats were empty
The stage was bare
Main doors opened
Boxes and boxes and boxes
Brought in
Tables set up
People came
More people came
Empty the boxes
Was the command
From on high
We did
Tote bags stuffed with T-shirts
Books and magazines
Put those bags in each seat
Came a voice from the blue
We did
Fill those bags fuller
Add more books
Was our final direction
We did
Tote bags completed
Waiting to be opened
Are we ready?
Yes we are
Ready for the
African American Read-In to begin.
